Electronics Recycling Not So Easy

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

We all see the the benefit to recycling electronics. There are some very toxic materials involved in the manufacture of electronic components and while manufaturers are trying to cut out the use of those toxic materials, there is something to be said about replacement materials. Apparently, India’s government is reluctant to ban the use of materials such as lead solder and they are taking some heat for it. However, if you look carefully at their reasoning, you might see that the issue is not so black and white. Once again, we see that as gung-ho as we want to be in relation to taking care of the environment, many times there are other factors that require careful  research first.

Recycling For A Price

I wrote an article earlier about convenience being an important factor to determine a recycling program’s effectiveness. I’d also like to add getting some sort of financial benefit. Successful recycling operations will provide both. And in case you think that there are a lot of people willing to “do the right thing” by recycling no matter what, here is another article that says otherwise. The scary thing with this one is the finding that people under 40 are less likely to recycle old cell phones unless there is an incentive – I thought it would be the other way around.

Places To Recycle Electronics

For those interested in electronics recycling, this article includes information on possible locations for recycling. Considering that all of the ones mentioned are in partnership with the EPA, you can be assured that they recycle electronics in a responsible way – none of that sending electronics to China to have a bunch of underpaid workers strip components down while being exposed to hazardous materials. All of these companies will be on the up and up.
