Germans 1, Americans 0

While I’m not in favor of giving everybody a handout as part of a stimulus package, it seems the Germans have come up with a deal that is having a pretty immediate impact on their economy. Perhaps the US government should have thought of something like this instead of just handing automakers huge bailout checks.

    This idea is not new, they’ve been doing it in California for years. The California Vehicle Retirement Program will pay up to $1000 to take your old car to the dismantler. The program is intended to improve the air quality by getting the worst polluters off the roads. Not sure if the program is still in effect due to California’s terrible budget woes. There were / are similar programs for turning in your old refrigerators.
